한 손에 가시 들고 또 한 손에 막대 들고
늙는 길 가시로 막고 오는 백발 막대로 치렸더니
백발이 제 먼저 알고 지름길로 오더라.

우탁 선생의 탄로가를 영역해 보았다. 우리 시조가 정형시이기에 번역도 정형시로 할 필요가 있다. 뜻에 집중해서 3행짜리 자유시로 번역하면 번역시의 행이 불필요하게 길어지고, 영시로 번역했을 경우 그 번역 효과가 상당히 떨어지는 것 같다.
처음에 3행시로 써보려고 했더니, 2번 째 행의 feet 가 8 feet 으로 과도하게 길어지는 경향이 있다. 끝에 Rhyme을 other, hair, hair으로 첫 행은 semi rhyme 정도 되는 것 같다.
그래서 6행으로 수정하면서, 1, 2 행 Rhyme, 4, 6행에 Rhyme을 주려 했다.
그러나, 첫 번 째 번역은 두 줄이 2feet 3feet으로 되었기에 맞추어 보느라고 부릅뜬 눈으로 라는 의미로 <<glared eyes>>를 추가해 보았다.
3번 째 시조 번역은 필자가 주장하던 Sijo방식으로 종장의 3. 5 음절을 영역으로도 3, 5 음절을 그대로 지키면서 7행으로 번해 보았다.
